Programme notes
JAN SANDSTRÖM
ACINTYAS
for String Orchestra
The title is taken from the Eastern, mysticism, where its basic idea, to go
beyond the world of opposites, in some way reminds of the musical states Sandström
is trying to create.
The whole faith of Buddhism circles around a so-called absolute visual angle
that is attained in Acintyas, the world of non-thinking, where the unity of
all opposites become a lively experience.
As it is written in a zen poem:
At the night-fall the cock-bird talkes about the dawn,
at mid-night about the bright sun
Acintyas was commissioned 1985 by the Stockholm Chamber
Orchestra (SNYKO) and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
